Concessions for Persons who are Visually Impaired

Some or all of the following concessions may be available to a person with a visual impairment. 

I. Concessions Available Alberta Wide

1. Telus Directory Assistance

  • Directory Assistance concessions are available to CNIB clients through Telus 
  • This exempts clients from paying the charges for calling 411 for directory assistance
  • If you agree to have the operator place the call for you however, charges will apply
  • An additional Telus statement is available in large print, Braille or IBM diskette format
  • Applications for exemptions are available at CNIB or any phone exchange location

2. Rogers Wireless and Bell Mobility

  • Exempts clients from paying the charges for calling 411 for directory assistance
  • This replaces the monthly $5.00 Directory Assistance credit currently applied to blind and visually impaired Rogers Wireless customers
  • A letter signed by a physician or eye care practitioner stating that you are visually impaired is necessary to receive this concession
  • If you wish to receive your bill in alternative format, this can be stated in the letter as well

3. Airline Boarding Assistance

  • Airlines provide boarding assistance to any disabled persons
  • A person with vision loss traveling alone can call upon airline staff for assistance as needed
  • When booking flights, it is best to advise the airline in advance if boarding assistance will be required
  • If you are a guide dog user, inform the airline at time of ticket purchase; a larger seat area may be allocated to you

4. Visions Electronics

  • Offers discounts in their stores across Alberta for CNIB clients
  • You may purchase computer and video equipment at cost plus 5%; audio equipment at cost plus 10%

5. Bus Service

  • Motor Coach Lines, Greyhound Bus Lines and Red Arrow permit a blind person and sighted escort, or blind person and guide dog to travel for the price of one ticket
  • To qualify, present your CNIB Identification Card when purchasing your ticket

6. Via Rail

  • Will permit a blind person and a sighted guide to travel for the price of one coach fare
  • This does not apply to berths
  • Present your CNIB Identification card when you purchase your ticket

7.  Access 2 Entertainment Card

  • Famous Players, Cineplex Odeon and Cineplex Galaxy movie theatres allow the escort of a legally blind person to attend a movie either free or up to the cost of $3.00 depending on the movie theatre
  • The legally blind person has to complete an application form and send in a copy of the CNIB Identification Card along with it or put their Registration Number on the form
  • The process takes 4-6 weeks to complete and the Access 2 Entertainment Card will be mailed directly to the client
  • Both the Access 2 Entertainment and CNIB identification must be shown at the ticket counter in order to receive this discounts
  • The card will be valid for 5 years form date of issueAn application can be downloaded from www.access2.ca

7. Galaxy Cinemas

  • Only accepts the Access 2 Entertainment Card
  • An escort will get in free

8. Disability Tax Credit

  • The Federal Government offers a Disability Tax Credit for those who are blind (20/200 or worse in both eyes after correction or field of vision restricted to less than 20 degrees)
  • A medical doctor or optometrist must  complete a Disability Tax Credit Certificate (T2201) to substantiate the claim

9. Handicapped Parking Sticker

  • A form available at any license registry office must be completed by family physician
  • Visual impairment alone is not a criteria for eligibility

II. Public Transit Concessions

CNIB card can be used as a transit pass for the following locations:

  • Calgary Transit
  • Lethbridge Transit
  • Grand Prairie
  • Edmonton
  • St. Albert
  • Sherwood ParkFort McMurray


III. Local Concessions

1. Calgary Zoo

  • 2 for 1 admission

2. Calgary Tower

  • Free admission

3. Calaway Park

  • Sighted guide will receive free admission

4. Telus World of Science

  • Admission to the Imax Theatre is free for the escort of a blind person
