Description: Introductory music begins to play. As title page appears displaying BrailleNote Tutorial, Using an External Keyboard, Online Video Training Modules, Alberta Education. Narrator: This section deals with connecting to an external keyboard. You can connect to a USB keyboard and practice keyboarding skills while using the BrailleNote. Let’s show you how. This is a standard USB keyboard. This particular model is from Dell. It can be any USB keyboard including from an Apple computer. We are plugging in at the back. It doesn’t matter which USB port we select. Once you’re connected you can actually use any button to navigate. For example if you were to go to the main menu you would typically use E with space to exit out of whatever program you’re in. On the keyboard the escape button is in the top left hand corner on most keyboards. Hit escape, exit main menu, you’re in the main menu. To navigate your menus instead of using the BrailleNote you can use the arrow keys, word processor, up and down will take you up and down the main menu, planner, address list, e-mail, address list. If you hit the first letter of one of the options you want in the menu it would take you there. This also works on the keyboard. Hitting the letter W takes us to the word menu. Again in the keyword menu if I hit C to create a document, O for open, P for print. These same rules apply using a keyboard. I’m going to enter a document so I need to back up one level. I’ll hit the escape key, exit keyword menu and we’ll press O for open. Again just on the BrailleNote press enter on the keyboard will take us into that folder. Just like before when we have to hit the space to get the list of files, hitting space on the keyboard brings up the list. List of all documents in general folder. Keyboardn txt is a file I created previously so that I can use text when I’m typing on the keyboard. At this point I could tell it if I want paragraphs to behave in a certain way or how it will open up. At the moment I’m all right with the settings that I had from before. I’m going to press no. Let’s type an example. This is an example that the keyboard works with the BrailleNote. There we are. I can also use my arrow keys to move my cursor. On the Braille display I can see the cursor moving as I’m selecting my back arrow. Backspace works as well as delete and again escape will save my file and exit me back to the main menu.
